LDPE

Low Density Polyethylene

Low density polyethylene (LDPE) is a thermoplastic polymer made from ethylene monomer. This polymer does not react at room temperature, except with strong oxidizing agents. Temperature tolerance for LDPE is in the range of 65°C to 90°C, although it lasts for a short time at these temperatures.

LDPE (Low Density Polyethylene)

Low density polyethylene (LDPE) is a thermoplastic made of ethylene monomer. It was the first polyethylene produced in 1933 by Imperial Chemical Industries (ICI) using a high-pressure process through free radical polymerization. Today, the same method is used to make it. An estimated 5.7% of LDPE is recycled in the US. Despite competition from more modern polymers, LDPE is still an important plastic polymer. In 2013, the global LDPE market reached a volume of approximately 33 billion dollars.

Usage of LPDE

LDPE is widely used to make various containers, dispensing bottles, washing bottles, pipes, plastic parts for computer parts and various laboratory molding equipment. It is mostly used in plastic bags.
Other products made of it are:

  • Plastic covers
  • Trays and dishes
  • Playground slides
  • Juice and milk cartons
  • Corrosion resistant surfaces
  • Parts that require flexibility
  • Packaging for computer hardware, such as hard disk drives, video cards, and optical disk drives
